Abstract

Islam and the Arabic language share a deeply intertwined relationship, each depending on the other. Arabic functions not only as a means of communication but also as a symbol of cultural and religious identity. This study examines the role and significance of Kamus Arab-Indonesia by Mahmud Yunus in the dissemination of Islam in Tanjung Balai Asahan. Employing historical and sociological approaches, this qualitative research collected data through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the dictionary serves as a vital tool for understanding Arabic as the language of the Qur’an and Hadith. It is utilized across various educational levels for Arabic language learning, religious competitions, and translation activities. Referring to Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, the dictionary contributes to shaping an Islamic habitus within the community by integrating Arabic into both daily life and formal education. As an objectified cultural capital, the dictionary broadens access to the Islamic intellectual tradition and supports the preservation of the Arabic language in Tanjung Balai Asahan. Functioning as both a cultural bridge and an educational instrument, the dictionary reinforces Islamic values and ensures its relevance for future generations
